Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan on Monday approved implementation of computerised vehicle identification and tracking system (VITS) in collaboration with the Citizen-Police Liaison Committee. A team of Nadra gave a demonstration to the governor at the Governor House. It was followed by a meeting where it was explained that the system would track each and every vehicle plying on roads.
The project that has been conceived and designed by Nadra, is a ground-based tracking system, which will not only provide the law enforcement agencies help to track vehicle movements but it will also control and manage traffic during peak hours. It would be useful during emergencies.
The Sindh government has identified 109 locations for installing VITS' observation equipment that would monitor movement of vehicles carrying vintage. In addition, more than 20 mobile vans carrying observation equipment would also be handed over to the Sindh police for snap checking purpose.
Initially, Karachi would have 20 locations for issuing vintage to vehicle owners. Each location would register approximately 1000 cars every day in this manner it would take 4-5 months for the registration of all the vehicles of Sindh. In Karachi alone, there are approximately 1.2 million vehicles.
Car owners willing to install Nadra tracking chip must possess computerised identity cards and the vehicle must be on his/her own name. Vehicles with open letters would not be issued vintage.
VITS would help police in curbing vehicle theft in addition to helping tax collectors to zero in on tax evaders through their identification.
The system is also likely to impose a check on police in tracking down stolen vehicles. To overcome vehicle theft a passive windshield radio frequency sticker will be used as a transponder for vehicle identity number, from which the radio frequency infrared readers placed at designated highways and roads would read the VIN.
Under the project, it would be mandatory for every vehicle to get VITS. All police check posts, major bridges and entry/exit points of towns will be equipped with trans-receivers and antennas to read the details of every vehicle.
A suspect car whose VITS chip has been removed will be identified instantly.
