ISLAMABAD: As United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) 1,500 permanent one-room shelters have also been completed in Punjab for victims of the floods which struck in 2010.
The UN Agency continues to distribute tents and other emergency relief supplies to the new flood victims in Sindh and Balochistan provinces.
UNHCR has committed to build 4,050 shelters for vulnerable families in Punjab whose homes were washed away by last year's devastating floods.
The homes have one main living area plus a toilet, washroom and kitchen.
A total of 30,000 people in Punjab will benefit from the UNHCR shelter project, which will be completed by the end of this year.
The 1,500 completed homes were built in Muzaffar Garh, Multan, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Layyah, Mianwali, Rajan Pur and DG Khan Districts.
The construction of the remaining 2,450 shelters is underway.
In addition to the shelter project, the UN Refugee Agency has helped over 17,000 victims of the 2010 floods to get their first ever computerized national identity cards (CNICs).
The cards will enable the recipients to access government assistance.
Local partner organizations are helping UNHCR in the identification and verification process for the new cards. To date, Layyah, Muzaffargarh, Bhakar, DG Khan, Rahim Yar Khan, Jhang, Rajan Pur and Mianwali districts have been covered.
The project, which began in February 2011, will be finalized in 2011.
In assisting those affected by this year's floodsin Sindh, UNHCR has so far distributed 10,000 tents and 10,000 kits comprising blankets, quilts, jerry cans, kitchen sets, mosquito nets and sleeping mats as well as 20,000 plastic sheets which can be used as basic shelters.
The relief items were distributed in Thatta, Badin, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allah Yar, Mirpur Khas, Sanghar, Omer Kot, Benazirabad and Tharparkar districts.
The agency has committed to supplying 70,000 tents and 70,000 emergency aid kits containing household items as well as other relief items to flood victims in the Sindh province.
