SYDNEY: The Australian dollar was trading decisively above parity with the greenback on Thursday, gaining nearly two cents as approval of a European bailout fund starts to look more likely.
At 2200 GMT, the Aussie was at 101.34 US cents, well up on its 99.42 cents close locally on Wednesday.
"It's primarily the rescheduling of the vote in Slovakia and a weaker US dollar," ANZ Banking Group senior dealer Alex Sinton said.
It follows Slovak parties agreeing to hold a new vote this week on revamping the eurozone's debt rescue fund.
Under pressure from European partners to vote again, a day after its parliament rejected an overhaul of the European Financial Stability Facility, four key parties struck a deal to adopt it in a second roll call by Friday.
The Aussie briefly edged above parity on Tuesday for the first time since September 22, but soon slipped back.
The risk-based currency first breached parity in October last year, hitting a record 110.81 US cents in July.
