Taiwan stocks fall amid euro zone woes; banks down

Published Updated

taiwanTAIPEI: Taiwan stocks fell 0.45 percent on Wednesday, tracking regional bourses and pressured by banking issues as investor concern lingered over the euro zone crisis and the US economic slowdown.

But Genius and other Apple Inc suppliers rose for a second day after Apple said iPhone 4S pre-orders topped 1 million in a single day.

"Yesterday's rally was only seen as a technical rebound. Uncertainty remains even after European and US markets have shown some relief in the past few sessions," said KGI Securities' senior vice president Chu Yen-min.

Taiwan's broader market was expected to hover in the 6,500-7,500 point range in the short term, he said.

At around 0215 GMT, the main TAIEX index had slipped 33.33 points to 7,365.38, retreating from a 2.59 percent rally in the previous session.

The financial sub-index shed 1 percent, and the glass index lost 3.2 percent

Phone camera lensmaker Genius gained 3.4 percent and Largan Precision was up 3 percent.

Contract manufacturer Pegatron soared 6.2 percent after a local newspaper report it had secured orders for 15 million Apple iPhone 4S units and was set to ship 2 million-2.5 million in the fourth quarter.

PC vendor Acer jumped 1.4 percent, while Compal, the world's No.2 contract laptop maker, declined 1.3 percent after posting September sales on Monday.

The Taiwan dollar weakened T$0.127 to trade at T$30.475.
