Iran Khodro, the largest car maker in the Middle East, launched a joint venture with Germany's DaimlerChrysler on Saturday for the sale and customer services of Mercedes Benz cars in Iran, Daimler said. DaimlerChrysler, which has a major market selling Chryslers in the United States, enters Iran amid increased pressure from Washington on leading US enterprises, such as Halliburton and General Electric to pull out of the Islamic Republic.
Washington threatens penalties against companies working in Iran, which it accuses of bankrolling terrorism and seeking nuclear arms. Tehran denies the charges.
The joint company, Mercedes Benz Iran, is 50 percent owned by Iran Khodro and 50 percent by DaimlerChrysler. It will import cars and offer after-sales services to customers. The German carmaker will export kits of its E-class sedans to Iran which will then be assembled by a subsidiary of Iran Khodro in a plant near Tehran.
