KARACHI: Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) has urged the government to ensure power supply to rice mills in Sindh and Punjab so that export orders are executed in time.
In a joint statement REAP Chairman Javed Islam Agha and Vice- chairman Safdar Mehkary said that Pakistan was facing severe competition from India as it has lifted ban on the export of non- basmati this year after three years' restriction.
They said that Indian exporters will try to get as much as share in international market as possible and therefore Pakistan's rice exports might fall, if uninterrupted power was not supplied to rice mills from the current month to January 2012.
"At least 4,000 rice mills are operating in Sindh and Punjab and we will be able to export 4.25 million tons of rice this year if uninterrupted supply of electricity is ensured to these mills", they added.
They said that Pakistan is going to have a bumper crop of 6.2 to 6.5 million tons of rice this year.
