imageISLAMABAD: As much as 24,501 metric tons of cotton seed will be available for sowing during the upcoming Kharif season (2016-17), which is about 61 percent of the total seed requirements of the country.

The availability of quality cotton seed in Punjab stands at 20,537 metric tons, 66 percent of total seed requirements in the provinces, according to the official figures.

The seed availability in Sind would be about 3950 metric tons, which would cater to the 48 percent demand for the seed in the provinces.

Similarly, the 15 metric tons of cotton seed will be available in Khyber Pakhtunkha which is 29 percent of the requirements of the province, the official data revealed.

However the seed testing figures are still in progress, so the seed data availability may vary.

During the fiscal year 2015-16, total seed availability was 34520 metric tons which was 86 percent of the total requirements of the country.

On the other hand, for sowing in Kharif 2016-17, paddy the seed availability stands at 32,720 metric tons which would cater to about 70% requirements of the country.

The availability of quality paddy seed in Punjab is 23,592 metric tons, 90.50 percent requirement of the province while the Sindh province will cater to about 40.69 percent of seed requirements as it has about 6364 metric tons seed available.

Khyber Phakhtunkhwa has 154.17 metric tons, 11.86 percent of its requirements while Balochistan possesses 2146 metric tons, about 61.56 of its total requirements.

In addition, imported hybrid paddy seed in the country has been calculated 464 metric tons whereas testing of some seeds are still in in progress.

During the year 2015-16, the availability of paddy seed was 50171.31 metric tons, much more than the requirements.

Meanwhile, for 2016-17, both public and private seed agencies procured about 18967.02 metric tons corn seed, which is 62.72 percent of total demand. This procurement also includes 7538 metric tons of imported seed.

Maize seed availability in Punjab is 11393.83 metric tons, 76 percent of its requirements whereas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 34.92 metric tons are available, 0.23 percent of its demand.

The availability of maize seed during 2015-16 was 19079, about

60 percent of country's requirement for the season.

For the year 2016-17, public and private sector seed agencies procured about 2726 metric tons of Mungbean seed which will meet 102.48 of total seed requirements.

In Punjab, Mungbean seed availability is 2711.50, about 117.89 percent of the provincial requirement.

The increase in availability of certified Mungbean seed (102.48 percent) is due to reduction of targeted sowing areas, according to the official data.
