MADRID: Spanish stocks were down by about 5.0 percent in early afternoon trading on Thursday, amid widespread nervousness and concern about the economic situation in Europe and the United States.
All stocks in the benchmark Ibex-35 index of most-traded Spanish shares were in the red, with banking stocks posting the sharpest losses.
Spain's largest bank Santander fell 5.76 percent to 5.428 euros while its rival BBVA plunged 5.96 percent to 5.36 euros.
