Profile of nominated Chief Justice of Pakistan

imageISLAMABAD: Senior most Judge of the Supreme Court Jawwad S. Khawaja was on Wednesday appointed new Chief Justice of Pakistan by President Mamnoon Hussain. He will take oath of his office on August 17 on attaining the age of superannuation of Chief Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk on August 16.

Justice Jawwad S Khawaja was born on September 10, 1950, at Wazirabad, Gujranwala district. He did his Graduation in Arts in 1971 from FC College, Lahore and LL.B from the Punjab University Law College, Lahore in 1973. He then obtained Masters (LL.M) degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 1975.

He was was enrolled as an advocate of the High Court in 1975 and as advocate of the Supreme Court in 1985.

He remained in legal practice until his appointment as a Judge of the Lahore High Court on April 21, 1999. He resigned as judge of the Lahore High Court on March 19, 2007.

He then joined the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) as Professor of Law and headed the Department of Law and Policy at LUMS until his appointment as judge of the Supreme Court on June 5, 2009.
