Wasan directs police for result-oriented steps on law, order

KARACHI: Sindh Home Minister Manzoor Hussain Wasan has directed the top brass of Sindh Police to take result-oriented steps to contain law and order situation in Karachi and other parts of the province.

"There is need to take effective steps to activate Sindh Police," he said while presiding over a meeting of senior police officials at Central Police Office (CPO), here on Wednesday.

He directed that area SSPs should be held responsible for law and order situation in their respective areas and postings be made on merit in this regard.

The minister expressed his deep concern over growing street crimes, bank robberies, cases of extortion and ordered measures to check these crimes effectively.

Wasan said that he has already got approved Rs5 billion package from the President to facilitate increase in the strength of police force and provide them latest equipment.

He said that cases of encroachment of properties and illegal excavation of "reti and bajri" (sand used in construction) were also on the rise and it was also the responsibility of police to help end this menace.

"Sometimes encroachers create law and order situation which spreads to other parts of the metropolis," he pointed out.

The minister said that the police authorities also need to check at which places the 30,000 police force was posted so that the strength may be deployed to more sensitive places to eliminate criminal activities.

Moreover, all the postings must be made at the police stations on merit he said and added that in future action will be taken against the concerned SHO for any lawlessness in his respective jurisdiction.

"Frequent transfers and postings should also be avoided," he directed.

Wasan said that during the holy month, particularly for Eid-ul-Fitr the shopping will surge and the police should take extra-security measures in this regard.

"I will also make surprise visits to check security around shopping centres," he maintained.

The minister maintained that since his take over of the Home Department, the situation was coming to normal in Orangi's Katti Pahari area and protests of KESC employees and the Kachi community have been contained.

On the occasion, he also sought suggestions from the senior police officers to further improve the law and order situation in Karachi.

He said that the salaries of Sindh Police will be brought at par with that of the Punjab Police and in this regard he has also sent a summary for approval of financial package of Rs 6.5 billion to President Asif Ali Zardari.

The IGP Sindh Wajid Ali Durrani, Additional IG Falak Khurshid, Additional IG Karachi Saud Ahmed Mirza, Additional IG Special Branch Rasool Buksh Saand, DIGs of all ranges of Karachi, SSPs and other high officials were present in the meeting.
