BERLIN: Michael Kohlmann has been appointed captain of the German Davis Cup team with Niki Pilic of Croatia acting as his special advisor, the German Tennis Federation (DTB) announced on Thursday.
Kohlmann's appointment in place of Carstens Arriens comes three weeks before Germany host France in the World Group first round.
The 41-year-old doubles specialist had been Arriens' deputy and moves up to the captaincy after his predecessor was fired after falling out with German number one Philipp Kohlschreiber.
Croat Pilic, 75, a former French Open finalist, returns to the German team which he helped to victories in 1988, 1989 and 1993. He also captained Croatia to victory in 2005 and Serbia in 2010.
Kohlmann's deputy will be Dirk Dier, who held the post in Germany's Fed Cup team, with former high jumper Carlo Traenhardt working as physical and mental coach.
Germany play France in Frankfurt on March 6-8, looking for revenge after France snatched a 3-2 win in last year's quarter-final clash.
