European shares open higher, tracking Asian gains

Published Updated

LONDON: European shares opened higher on Monday, extending the previous session's gains on overnight strength in Asia and after Wall Street ended last week strongly, with oil stocks among the top gainers.

At 0807 GMT, the FTS Euro first 300 was trading up 0.4 percent at 1,169.01 points, extending Friday's 0.2 percent gain.

The STOXX Europe 600 Oil & Gas index was among the top gainers, up 0.5 percent, supported by Egypt-fuelled oil price strength, with BP up 0.6 percent on a report it is in talks to buy into an offshore Indian field.

"We're looking at a continuation of the move last week," said Giles Watts, head of equities at City Index. "The [U.S.] jobless number wasn't particularly impressive but the Dow didn't seem to be too bothered."

"At the moment, clients are feeling that any dips can be bought into and the trend is an upwards one, and I can't see that being thrown off course in the short term," he added.

Asian stocks neared a three-year high on Monday, mirroring a strong end to the week for U.S. markets fuelled by sector rotation and after a slide in the U.S. jobless figure more than offset a much weaker than expected non-farm payrolls number.
