FRANKFURT: HeidelbergCement, the German producer of construction materials, said on Wednesday that the mild winter and improving economy enabled it to narrow its losses in the first three months of this year.
"The mild winter weather and the positive development of the economy in HeidelbergCement's markets have led to a significant increase in sales volumes in all business lines in Europe," the company wrote in its quarterly report.
In the period from January to March, the group's net loss narrowed to 147 million euros ($205 million).
At an operating level, HeidelbergCement returned to the black, with a profit of 57 million euros compared to a loss of 24 million euros a year earlier.
Revenues rose by 5.7 percent to 2.75 billion euros.
Looking ahead, HeidelbergCement said it was sticking to its full-year targets.
"The managing board has set the goal of further increasing revenue, operating income, and profit for the financial year in 2014 on a comparable basis," it said.
