PESHAWAR: Four people were killed and three injured in an explosion in the Matni Bazaar near the provincial capital Peshawar Thursday, officials said.
The explosion was witnessed at Ladawar area close to a school and towards the end of the Matni Bazaar. The cause has been revealed to be an improvised explosive device (IED). Two nearby shops and two vehicles also suffered the loss.
The injured were shifted to the Lady Reading Hospital by volunteers. Police surrounded the area immediately as it feared another such blast.
Eye-witnesses reported that the bomb was planted by the roadside. Police found the bomb to be located in a heap of trash and exploded when a vehicle passed by.
The Matni Bazar is located 28 km from the provincial capital.
The Matni Bazaar is an area often visited by nearby residents of Kohat, Peshawar and Khyber Agency as well as locals from the Matni area.
The school is located above the shops of Matni Bazaar. As the school was closed for summer vacations, no casualty has been reported from the school.
Bomb attacks by militants have become a frequent occurrence in the northwestern areas of the country. Earlier on June 5, six people were killed and seven injured when at a crowded bus stand in the outskirts of Peshawar.
