Catherine AshtonBENGHAZI: EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton arrived Sunday in the rebel-held city of Benghazi in eastern Libya on a visit to open a European Union mission, an AFP correspondent reported.

Ashton is due to meet the head of the rebels' National Transitional Council Mustafa Abdul Jalil before inaugurating the EU mission in a Benghazi hotel.

Ahead of the visit she had said opening an EU office in the rebel stronghold was aimed at providing support for opponents of veteran strongman Moamer Qadhafi and for the people of Libya particularly in health and education.
