UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations on Monday named former Chilean foreign minister Mariano Fernandez as new special representative to Haiti to help guide the impoverished state to stability after a devastating earthquake.
Fernandez, 66, will take over as head of the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti, MINUSTAH, from Edmond Mulet, who took the post temporarily after the January 2010 earthquake in which about 220,000 people died.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki moon has been looking for a successor to Mulet for several months and for a while former French foreign minister Bernard Kouchner had been tipped for the post.
Fernandez was Chile's foreign minister in 2009-10 and had before that been the Chilean ambassador to the United States and Britain. He was in exile in Germany during the 1974-82 military dictatorship.
