PARIS: The European Union this week granted export licences for 264,000 tonnes of soft wheat, taking the total since the beginning of the 2010/11 (July-June) season to 17.0 million tonnes, official data showed on Thursday.
The total so far this season was well ahead of the 15.4 million tonnes of export licences cleared by the same stage in 2009/10.
Demand this season for European wheat, notably a good-quality French crop, has been boosted by poor harvests in other major producers like Russia and purchases by importing countries facing food price inflation and civil unrest.
Within the weekly volume, about 160,000 tonnes of export licences were requested in France, some 56,000 tonnes in the Netherlands and 40,500 tonnes in Germany.
The EU also granted this week licences to export 126,000 tonnes of durum, including about 92,000 tonnes in France and 25,500 tonnes in Italy.
The weekly haul brought the total so far this season to 1.7 million tonnes, compared with 709,000 tonnes a year earlier.
