LAHORE: The Punjab Food Department has so far procured over 1.4 million metric ton wheat against its target of 3.5 million tons, directly from growers across the province, during its procurement started on April 20 last.
Secretary Food Punjab Sqn Ldr (R), Muhammad Irfan Elahi told APP Thursday at the Punjab Assembly that a total of 60 per cent of gunny bags had so far been disbursed among farmers on first come first basis throughout the province on priority.
He said all Divisional Commissioners,District Co- Ordination Officers,Director Food,Additional Director Food Punjab and he himself would continue to pay series of surprise visits to monitor performance of the centres besides redressal of genuine grievances of farmers on the spot.
Meanwhile Divisional Commissioner, Gujranwala Saeed Iqbal Wahala told APP by telephone from Narowal that interests of growers were being looked after and it had been ensured that no injustice should be done with farmers while staff deployed at centres had also been instructed strictly not to compromise on the quality of wheat as per policy of the government.
The Food Department has set up 375 procurement centres throughout the province for purchasing wheat from growers.
