Trade deficit narrows 1.94pc

PORT-QAISMISLAMABAD: Country's trade deficit witnessed negative growth of 1.94 percent during the first ten months of the current fiscal year as compared to the corresponding period of last year.

The trade deficit narrowed to $12.1 billion in July-April (2010-11) as compared to the deficit of 10.03 billion last year, according to data released by Federal Bureau of Statistic here.

The exports, which for the first time have crossed the $ 20 billion mark in the first 10 months of the current financial year, have helped reducing the trade gap.

Exports during the period under review were recorded at $20.154 billion as against the exports of $15.773 billion during the same period of last year, showing an increase of 27.78 percent.

The imports into the country increased by 14.73 percent by growing up from $28.122 billion to $32.263 billion, the data revealed.

Exports during April 2011 surged by 39.74 percent as compared to the exports of the same month of last year. Exports in April 2011 stood at $2.377 billion as against the exports of US$1.701 billion in last April.

The imports during April 2011 were recorded at $3.247 billion against the imports of $3.016 billion in April last year, showing an increase of 7.66 percent.

As compared to exports of $2.497 billion in March 2011, the exports in April 2011 decreased by 4.81 percent while the imports declined by 4.98 percent during the month when compared to the imports of $3.417 in March 2011.
