Foreign investment up 40pc in Latin America

Published Updated

MexicoMEXICO CITY: Foreign investment in Latin America grew around 40 percent in 2010, compared with the previous year, representing around 113 billion dollars, a United Nations body reported Wednesday.

"The figures we are presenting today take into account the growing involvement of Latin America and the Caribbean in economic globalization," said Alicia Barcena, Executive Secretary of the ECLAC regional body, on presentation of an annual report in Mexico City.

Brazil received the highest amount of foreign direct investment (FDI) with some 48.5 billion dollars, followed by Mexico with around 17.7 billion dollars, Barcena said.

Chile was third with around 15.1 billion dollars, followed by Peru with 7.3 billion, Colombia with 6.8 and Argentina with 6.2 billion dollars.

Venezuela and Ecuador received the least.

The United States remained the main country to invest in the region, responsible for 17 percent of FDI, followed by The Netherlands at 13 percent, China at nine percent, and Spain and Canada, both at four percent.

The UN body predicted foreign investment in the region would increase between 15 and 25 percent in 2011.
