imageJAKARTA: Indonesia's president said the government would announce an economic policy package on Friday, including measures to combat growing inflation and job losses in Southeast Asia's largest economy.

"In the last three days, the cabinet has been working to formulate economic policy and management with the main aim to maintain our financial stability," President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said in a statement.

"We will maintain growth from further slowdown." The president made no direct comment on any possible measures related to the recent slump in the rupiah, bond prices and the stock market.

Head of the National Planning Agency Armida Alisjabana said the package would include measures to expedite investment projects.

The government also plans some tax incentives, such as tax holidays and allowance, though she gave no details.

On jobs, the government will encourage companies, especially those in labour-intensive industries, not to lay off workers in the face of a decline in exports and widespread union demands for higher wages.

Commenting on inflation, Alisjabana said Friday's measures would relate to ensuring sufficient supplies of food and stable prices. The government has been criticised for mishandling supplies of basic foodstuffs this year, adding to inflation which is running at a 4-1/2 year high.

Friday's announcement will be made by chief economic minister Hatta Rajasa.
