Bashar al AssadUNITED NATIONS: Syria's President Bashar al-Assad must "change course now" and end repression of opposition demonstrators, US ambassador Susan Rice told a special UN Security Council meeting on Wednesday.

Speaking after the 15-nation council failed to agree a statement on the violence in Syria, Rice said the international community must unify to condemn the crackdown.

A top UN official told the meeting that between 350 and 400 people have been killed in Syria since mid-March.
