Singapore's Lee re-elected MP uncontested

SingaporeSINGAPORE: Singapore's founding father Lee Kuan Yew was re-elected to parliament on Wednesday without any contest as the ruling party braces for a stiff challenge from the opposition during May 7 polls.

Lee, 87, and four other members of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) contesting a multiple-seat ward, were declared the only qualified candidates after a tiny opposition party failed to beat the 12 noon (0400 GMT) deadline for filing their nomination papers.

He was elected prime minister in 1959 after Singapore gained self-rule from Britain and has been returned to power ever since.
