SHANGHAI: Ford Motor Company on Tuesday announced plans to introduce 15 new vehicles to China by 2015 as it ramps up efforts to increase its share of the world's biggest auto market.
The US giant made the announcement at the Shanghai auto show, which opened to the media on Tuesday with carmakers from around the world showcasing a range of new models in hopes of finding Chinese buyers.
"We are proud and delighted today to announce our accelerated expansion plan for China that will see 15 all-new One Ford vehicles launched here by 2015," said Joe Hinrichs, chairman and chief executive of Ford China.
"This plan reinforces our commitment to offer a full range of vehicles to new car buyers in China, the world's biggest and most exciting auto market," Hinrichs said in a statement.
The 15 new vehicles are part of a plan to introduce 50 "new products and power-trains" in the Asia Pacific and Africa in the next four years, the statement said.
Ford also said it plans to more than double its dealership outlets in China by mid-decade and that its next-generation Ford Kuga would be built in China.
The first of the 15 vehicles will be the new Ford Focus, it said.
About 2,000 car and parts makers from 20 countries are participating in the show, showcasing 75 new car models, 19 of them making their world premieres. A total of 1,100 vehicles will be on display.
