Turkish shares off record highs, lira eases

Published Updated

liraISTANBUL: The Turkish lira was a touch weaker and bond yields edged up in thin trade on Thursday, with volumes expected to stay low until the end of the year.

Istanbul's main share index was up 0.32 percent at 78,240 points, after earlier hitting its highest ever level of 78,381.73 points in thin trade and outperforming a rise of 0.27 percent in the global emerging markets index.

"In the last trading days of the year, Istanbul stock exchange keep edging up towards new highs," wrote analysts at Ata Invest.

By 0814 GMT, the lira was at 1.7933 against the greenback , dipping from 1.7925 late on Wednesday. Against its euro-dollar basket it eased to 2.0858 from 2.0830.

The yield on the two-year benchmark bond inched up to 6.09 percent from Wednesday's close of 6.08 percent.

"Trading volumes will stay low until the new year. In January, with investors opening new positions, we can see a rally," said Tufan Comert, strategist at Garanti Securities.

He said the lira would stay above 1.79 to the dollar until 2013 due to slight year-end selling pressure.
