Asad Shafiq responds to Shoaib Akhtar’s criticism

• “I would have not scored centuries in Australia, South Africa and England if I was not courageous enough,” says the middle-order batsman.

Pakistan middle-order batsman Asad Shafiq responding to Shoaib Akhtar’s criticism said he would not have scored tons in challenging conditions if he wasn’t courageous enough.

Former Pakistan fast bowler had criticised Shafiq for defensive mindset and not dominating the opponents through courage and determination.

“I would have not scored centuries in Australia, South Africa and England if I was not courageous enough,” said Shafiq while talking to media via video link. “I don’t think I have to justify myself to anyone in this regard,”

“This is his [Akhtar] opinion but I think one should check the records before forming an opinion,” he added.

The admitted that he could have done even better if he could have played up in the order.

"I think I should've achieved more than where I stand in cricket right now,” said the 34-year-old. “I batted at number six position, where a batsman can't play long inns. One can't score 15-20 test centuries playing at that spot. This is a wrong perception that I'm not an attacking batsman. Brisbane Test is an example,"

The Karachi native also backed former Pakistan Captain Sarfaraz Ahmed’s return to the national side and said it will be beneficial.

“Sarfaraz Ahmed is a close friend of mine. I don’t know if he will make a comeback in the Pakistan side, but his presence will be beneficial for Pakistan side if he gets the nod from the selectors,” he said. “He is working hard to improve his fitness as well.”
