Pakistan to introduce much needed standards for its auto industry

• After food and electronics, vehicles made in Pakistan will now be included in the standard system, says Fawad.
• Pakistani consumers often slam the local auto industry for the quality of its cars, lack of safety features and high prices.

Pakistan has finally commenced the process of standardising its auto sector, announced Federal Minister for Science and Technology Chaudhry Fawad Hussain on social media.

“Pakistan has initiated to make major reforms into standards, and after food and electronics, vehicles made in Pakistan will now be included in the standard system,” said Chaudhry in a tweet. The development is good news for Pakistani consumers that often slam the local auto industry for the quality of its cars, lack of safety features and high prices.

“In this regard a meeting has been called between All Pakistan Automobiles Association and all stakeholders on February 26,” the federal minister further informed.

Pakistan auto sector is dominated by the Big Three i.e. Toyota, Suzuki and Honda, the trio of Japanese auto manufacturers is often criticized by public for not introducing much improvements in its products, despite charging high prices.

Earlier, it was learnt that car sales in the month of January, 2020 stood at 10,095 units, showing a 48 percent sales decline as compared to 19,353 units sold in the same period last year.
