  • Saqlain says he would have given Sarfaraz 'one more series.'
  • The off-spinner that the captaincy change is another experiment from PCB.

Pakistan former off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq claims that if he would have been Pakistan cricket chief selector, he would have given another chance to Sarfaraz Ahmed, after the wicket-keeper batsman was sacked from T20I and Test captaincy last week.

"They lost to Sri Lanka badly and because of that, they removed him. They gave the T20 captaincy to Babar Azam but I don't know how good he is. I don't know if he has captained at the under-19 level or domestic cricket. If I would be in Misbah's [Pakistan cricket chief selector] shoes, I would have given a chance to Sarfaraz rather than just one series. I would have given him one more series," he said, quoted Khaleej Times.

The PCB announced on Friday Azhar Ali as the national cricket team captain for Pakistan’s World Test Championship matches in the 2019-20 season. Meanwhile, Babar Azam was named captain of the No.1 ranked T20I side until next year’s ICC T20 World Cup Australia 2020, which is now exactly one year away.

Saqlain who represented Pakistan in 49 Tests and 169 ODIs and took 208 and 288 scalps was of the view that removing Sarfaraz from captaincy was another experiment by the PCB.

"They are doing a lot of experiments and this is another experiment," Saqlain said. “PCB is trying and doing a bit of an experiment. And I always believe that you can experiment on a lower level and not the highest level. You can do experiments at the age group level, Pakistan 'A' or domestic cricket. But at the highest level, you are there to win the game even if you are playing against the No.10 team in the world," felt Saqlain.
