Former UEFA president Michel Platini has been arrested over the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar.

According to French publication Mediapart, the 63-year-old was taken into custody on Tuesday morning as part of the investigation by the Anti-Corruption Office of the Judicial Police (OCLCIFF).

The former Juventus midfielder and France captain — who won the Ballon d'Or three times in succession in the 1980s — was president of the body between 2007 and 2015, before he was banned by Fifa's Ethics Committee.

Qatar was controversially revealed as the hosts of the 2022 World Cup back in December 2010.

Platini is currently serving a four-year ban from involvement in football - reduced twice from an original eight-year sanction - after he was found guilty of receiving a "disloyal payment" from then-Fifa president Sepp Blatter.
