The process of voluntary repatriation of Afghan refugees to Afghanistan will resume from today (Monday). The process was temporarily suspended in November last year due to winter season. According to the spokesman for United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) Dunya Khan, a repatriation centre has been set up in Chamkani area of Peshawar to register Afghan refugees who are willing to return to Afghanistan.
He said that so far 16,000 Afghan refugees had registered themselves in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for voluntary repatriation to their home country and they would be sent back to Afghanistan during current and next month under the voluntary repatriation process. He said that during this period the process of registration of refugees would also continue.
The UNHCR spokesman said that no registration is required for those Afghan refugees who are willing their repatriation through Chaman border. He said that more than 370,000 registered Afghan refugees were repatriated from Pakistan to Afghanistan in 2016 under the voluntary repatriation program. The UNHCR was providing $400 to each returning refugee besides food and other basic items. However, this year the compensation was reduced to $200 to each returning refugee, the spokesman said.
