Only recently TV viewers watched a Karachi grave-digger who is charged with the offence of digging a newly-buried grave. Such instances cannot be prevented until new graveyards are available. The concerned authorities are, therefore, requested to provide land for new graveyards to stop re-digging of old graves, that are not visited by their kith and kins for whatever reasons.
At present, the staff handling the affairs of graveyards in Karachi and elsewhere are not educated. Ur graveyards have increasingly become the dens of gamblers and the drug addicts. The new graveyards are, therefore, unavoidable for long for this city of teeming millions. The new graveyards should, therefore, be laid on modern lines. The new cemeteries are supposed to have easy approaches to the graves, pucca pathways, electric lights, water supply, toilet facilities. The graves should be systematically demarcated, each grave must be of the same size so that no one could try to encroach unauthorised space. Lastly, graves should be provided at affordable prices. Payments made for graves plus maintenance charges for old and new graves would supplement the official budget given to each graveyard.
