Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCCI) will make efforts to initially set up at least 10 to 15 clusters under Co-operative Vocational Training (CVT) programme in order to overcome the shortage of skilled workforce with the help of GIZ, said Rana Sikandar Azam Acting President FCCI. Addressing an awareness session on CVT today, he said that the trained manpower is necessary to improve the quality of products in addition to give a quantum jump to our production.
He expressed satisfaction over the model of CVT and told that under this program the workers get 80 percent practical experience during their job but for the remaining 20 percent theory, they are sent to the approved training institute. He appreciated the efforts of GIZ for the training of skilled industrial workers but said that the Faisalabad has also emerged as a major business center of the country and it also needs skilled persons for marketing and sales.
He said that there is acute shortage of skilled salesmen who are getting salary from Rs 20, 000 to Rs 50, 000 in according to their experience and skill. However, there is no proper institution for their training and hence the GIZ should also look into this aspect, he added.
Engineer Ahmad Hasan VP FCCI told that Faisalabad is earning 6 billion dollars for Pakistan but it has been totally ignored in the policy making. It is in this connection that the industrial sector is facing continuous crisis whereas the exports are also declining every year. He told that the 4 major universities of Faisalabad have thousands of enrolment and on the completion of their degree program, the passed out graduates have to face the problem of employment. On the other hand the industrial sector is facing shortage of skilled workers, he added.
Engineer Ahmad Hasan said that some leading industrial units have already set up their own training centers to impart customised training to their workers but the small and medium entrepreneurs cannot afford this facility, hence, for them clusters may be created for the training of their workforce.
He also stressed for a uniform syllabus for different trades throughout Pakistan so that a worker trained in any institution could get job on the basis of this certification anywhere in Pakistan. He assured to conduct a survey to assess the total needs of skilled workers in different sectors of Faisalabad.
Colonel Qamar (Retd), General Secretary All Pakistan Footwear Association also addressed the function and explained his experience with GIZ. He said that he also conducted a survey and was surprised to know that 80 percent of workers employed in footwear industry were illiterate. He told that he made arrangements at owners' expense for training of their workers with the help of GIZ and 8 skilled workers were sent to Germany for training. He told that earlier they were making 7 pairs of shoes from 1 skin but after coming back from training they were able to make 14 pairs of shoes from the same 1 skin.
The awareness session was also addressed by Aamara Mukhtar and Arif Mukhtar of GIZ. They also screened a documentary while Acting President Rana Sikandar Azam offered vote of thanks.
