In order to produce a credible and balanced news story, a reporter must verify facts from different sources and make sure accommodating the views of all parties involved in the issue. Veteran journalist Farooq Moin said this while addressing reporters at a Health Reporting Workshop at IBA's Center for Excellence in Journalism (CEJ) here on Tuesday.
He described the fact checking practice as matter of the reporter's credibility. He advised young journalists to work with devotion, honesty and neutrality. The event was organized in collaboration with Sanofi Pakistan on critical reporting skills and competencies in healthcare with the aim of honing the craft of knowledge-based reporting on health issues.
He said health reporters must focus on the provision of safe drinking water and draw attention of the government to bring about drastic improvements in the health care system particularly in the rural areas of the country where it is needed on priority. Health reporter by exclusive and investigative reporting and also visiting rural areas must report without fear or favor true facts. Attending workshops, seminars, conference and reading latest trends in health care will contribute to better reporting, he said.
Waqar Bhatti, a Senior Health Reporter, who was also the guest speaker at workshop, urged reporters to increase their understanding medical terminologies by reading as much as possible. One needs regular field visits, update his knowledge and never hesitate in learning from others. Health reporting is all about learning new things and communicating them to people", Bhatti added. Sanofi Pakistan Director External Affairs, Laila Khan presented an overview of company's operations in Pakistan. She thanked the Speakers, as well as Director CEJ Kamal Siddiqui and his team members for affiliating this expedient effort.
