Model Customs Collectorate (MCC), Port Qasim on Saturday claimed to have foiled an attempt to evade millions of rupees taxes through under-invoicing. According to details, the action was taken on a tip-off, which revealed that some unscrupulous elements were planning to evade millions of rupees taxes by mis-declaring the consignments.
Reacting on this information, collector Port Qasim Mukaram Jaki has directed the field formation to mount strict vigilance and avoid tax evasion. The staff of Port Qasim collectorate has later spotted 30 containers of sawn timber, which were being cleared through green channel. After thorough examination of records, it was revealed that valuation ruling 917/2016 has been avoided to clear the consignment at low value, which may provide a financial loss of Rs 50 million to the national kitty.
Meanwhile customs officials confirmed the said action, saying that Collectorate Port Qasim through timely action had succeeded to avoid tax evasion amounting to Rs 50 million and added that similar modus operandi was also applied to evade taxes in the clearance of umbrella consignments.
Moreover, they said that Collectorate had also initiated recovery exercise against tax dodgers and out of total Rs 80 million tax collection; around Rs 30 million has been recovered in this connection.
