Though the water scarcity has almost jolted the country's biggest cosmopolitan and populous port city Karachi recently, the four live rivers are flowing with enough fresh water to meet all irrigation needs of the country. The Indus River System Authority(Irsa) is discharging 2,70,000 cusecs water into the countrywide irrigation canal network for sowing and growing the Kharif crops including cash crops cotton, rice and sugarcane, vegetables, fodder for livestock and fruit orchards.
According to 19th May Wapda water report, the water regulatory body is releasing 50,500 cusecs from the Tarbela dam on mighty Indus, 75,500 cusecs off Mangla dam on river Jhelum, 81,300 cusecs run of the Kabul river water and 63,500 cusecs run of the river Chenab water.
The water inflow in the river Indus at Jinnah barrage is 124300 cusecs , at Chashma 110600 cusecs at Taunsa- 90800 cusecs at Panjnad-59500, at Guddu-96200 cusecs at Sukkur-62400 cusecs and at Kotri-Inflows 22800 cusecs.
After filling all irrigation canals to their capacity, the Sindh irrigation is discharging 16.000 cusecs water into the Indus delta.
