Punjab University Oriental College Department of Urdu has organised a seminar in which Pakistan's renowned linguistic expert Dr Tariq Rehman delivered a comprehensive lecture on social and political history of Urdu language. He denied all false assumptions regarding Urdu language and said that Urdu was neither a mash up of different languages nor it began in the 17th century.
He said that Urdu was one of a few ancient languages of the sub-continent. He said that Arabic, Persian, Turkish and English languages affected Urdu language but all languages accepted this kind of influence. He said that language establishment had also affected Urdu language during the British rule and the effects were still there.
On this occasion Chairman Department of Urdu Dr Muhammad Kamran, Dr Muhammad Fakhar ul Haq Noori, Dr Zia ul Hassan, Marghoob Hussain Tahir, Dr Nasir Abbas Nayyar, Head of Persian Department Dr Moeen Nizami and a large number of students of M Phil/PhD were also present. In the end, Dr Kamran gave a set of books published by the department and research papers to Dr Tariq Rehman as a gift from department.
