Pakistan, UK agree to structured mechanism for bilateral talks

  • Dar urges UK to support international law, treaty commitments on Indus Waters
Published Updated

Pakistan and the United Kingdom have agreed to establish a structured mechanism for formal talks between their foreign ministries to strengthen bilateral ties and regularly review progress in key areas of cooperation.

The understanding was reached during delegation-level talks between Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar and British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband in London on Thursday.

The two sides reviewed the full spectrum of Pakistan-UK relations and underscored the importance of sustained high-level engagement and closer coordination on matters of mutual interest.

The ministers also exchanged views on major regional and international developments, including the evolving situation in the Middle East. Dar briefed Miliband on Pakistan’s diplomatic and mediation efforts in the region and the progress made through these engagements.

Miliband appreciated Pakistan’s constructive role and facilitation efforts aimed at promoting dialogue, diplomacy and stability in the Middle East.

Indus Waters Treaty, security concerns discussed

The talks also focused on developments concerning the Indus Waters Treaty and the regional security situation.

Dar highlighted what Pakistan described as India’s persistent violations of its international obligations and stressed the need to uphold international law and treaty commitments.

He also expressed serious concern over terrorist threats emanating from Afghan soil, saying militant groups operating from Afghanistan posed a threat to Pakistan’s peace and security.

Both sides stressed the importance of continued engagement to promote peace, stability and cooperation in the region and beyond.

The two ministers also acknowledged the important role of the Pakistani diaspora in strengthening longstanding ties and people-to-people links between Pakistan and the UK.
