Emirates Global Aluminium sees faster progress restoring Al Taweelah

DUBAI: Emirates Global Aluminium said on Thursday it was making faster-than-expected progress restoring production at its Al Taweelah complex after the site was hit by Iranian strikes in March, though hot metal output would take up to a year to return to pre-incident levels.
The Al Taweelah complex, one of the world’s largest aluminium production sites, was badly damaged on March 28 when Iranian strikes hit the Khalifa Economic Zone Abu Dhabi, forcing an emergency shutdown.
Two employees were admitted to hospital but have since been discharged, the company said.
EGA must progressively restore each of the smelter’s 1,262 reduction cells to resume hot metal production.

Anode removal is complete across all cells, bath cleaning has been finished at around 90% of cells, and frozen metal has been cleared from more than 20% of them.
The first cell was restarted on May 26, and 89 have now been brought back online, the company said.
