LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved the establishment of the Institute of Surgical Orthopaedic and Medical Rehabilitation and Children’s Hospital-IV under the Nawaz Sharif Medical District project.

The chief minister also approved the construction of a Plastic Reconstructive Surgery and Burn Centre, an Institute of Genetic and Blood Diseases, a Centre of Excellence for Nursing and Midwifery, an Institute of Ophthalmology and an Infectious Diseases Hospital within the medical city.

According to the plan, seven major hospitals with a total capacity of 1,519 beds will be developed in phases in the Nawaz Sharif Medical City.

The approval was granted during a special meeting chaired by Maryam Nawaz, to review matters related to public-private partnership (PPP) projects across the province.

Expressing satisfaction over the Punjab Public-Private Partnership Authority becoming fully operational after 19 years, the chief minister appreciated Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman, Finance Secretary Mujahid Sherdil and Punjab Public-Private Partnership Authority CEO Dr Zeeshan Hanif for their efforts.

The meeting reviewed the potential for public-private partnerships in 110 proposed development projects across Punjab. A proposal to establish student hostels under the PPP model for the first time in the province was also discussed.

Projects relating to roads, trucking terminals, bus stands, model bazaars and food streets were also reviewed.

The meeting was informed that four projects under the PPP framework had become operational, while feasibility studies for 27 projects had been completed and work on additional projects was progressing rapidly.

In the briefing, it was further highlighted that four major chief minister initiatives included in the PPP plan, an FMD production plant in the Nawaz Sharif Medical District, the Time Travel Park Lahore project, shrimp farming and the Mines-to-Metal Chiniot project.

The CM Punjab said the journey of development in Punjab would continue under all circumstances and stressed that the objective of the PPP model was to ensure private-sector participation in the development process. She reiterated that development projects envisaged under the public-private partnership framework would be taken to completion.
