ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday handpicked Federal Minister for Education Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui to join the Cabinet’s powerful Economic Coordination Committee (ECC), signalling a boost to coalition representation in top economic decision-making.

Dr Siddiqui, a senior leader of Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), a key ally of the ruling coalition, is expected to contribute to the committee’s deliberations on economic policy, the prime minister said, underlining hopes that his participation would bolster the country’s development agenda.

The ECC, the country’s highest federal-level economic decision-making body, is charged with urgent financial, commercial and macroeconomic policy decisions. Operating under the federal cabinet, it functions as a fast-track forum for critical economic matters before formal ratification.
