Push to sway fiscal priorities: MQM-P tables its proposals before PM

ISLAMABAD: As the federal budget for fiscal year 2026-27 looms, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) on Wednesday tabled its proposals before Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, signalling an assertive push to influence the government’s fiscal priorities.

The MQM-P delegation, led by Minister for Federal Education and party convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, held extensive discussions with the prime minister.

Key party leaders, including Dr Farooq Sattar, and National Assembly members Syed Amin ul Haq and Javed Hanif, were present.

The high-level meeting also saw Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Senator Ishaq Dar and Prime Minister’s Advisor Rana Sanaullah in attendance.

A statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office said that the talks centred on public welfare projects, particularly in Sindh and Karachi, where MQM-P has historically wielded strong influence.

Party leaders emphasised the need for targeted allocations to address urban development, education and health initiatives in their constituencies.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed relevant authorities to carefully review MQM-P’s proposals and devise a feasible, comprehensive action plan ahead of the budget’s presentation.

The prime minister noted that MQM-P, a key ally of the ruling coalition, has consistently backed government initiatives, often acting as a bridge between federal policy and Sindh’s urban electorate.

The discussions also touched on the broader political landscape, reflecting the party’s continued strategic engagement with the centre.

With the budget session approaching, MQM-P’s assertive presentation signals the party’s intent to secure both fiscal concessions and political leverage, underscoring the delicate balancing act within the ruling coalition.
