KARACHI: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab carried out late-night inspections of key infrastructure projects across the megacity, officials said on Friday, as authorities push to address long-standing urban issues and improve traffic flow.

During a visit to the congested Gul Plaza area, Wahab reviewed work on a new sewerage pipeline aimed at resolving chronic drainage issues. Officials briefed him that the project involves laying a 24-inch diameter line stretching about 2,500 feet (approximately 762 metres).

“The completion of this project will provide a lasting solution to the area’s drainage problems,” Wahab said.

The Mayor also inspected road repair and beautification work along Shahrah-e-Usman, directing officials to expedite progress while ensuring minimal disruption to daily commuters.

Later, Wahab visited the Azeempura flyover project near the Shah Faisal Colony interchange, a key traffic junction connecting major arteries of the city. He said the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation had set a target of completing the flyover within 100 days and that work was progressing at pace.

He said the flyover will ease congestion and cut travel time between Shahrah-e-Bhutto and Jinnah International Airport, a route frequently affected by heavy traffic.

Karachi, which is economic hub of the country, has long struggled with aging infrastructure and traffic issues, the challenges that city authorities say they are trying to address through accelerated development projects.

The Mayor reiterated that improving civic infrastructure remained a priority, adding that all available resources were being deployed to enhance municipal services in the sprawling metropolis.
