Over 230 cases linked to Sangjani rally: Interim bail of PTI leaders extended
ISLAMABAD: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Thursday extended the interim bail of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders in more than 230 cases linked to the November 26 Sangjani rally, protests outside the Supreme Court, and other demonstrations.
Hearing the case, ATC Judge Abdul Hasnat Muhammad Zulqarnain directed that the PTI leaders should not be arrested until 21 May.
PTI leaders, including Umair Niazi, Raoof Hasan, and Azam Swati, appeared before the court, which instructed both prosecution and defence to present arguments at the next hearing. The cases against PTI leaders had been registered at Tarnol, Ramna, Aabpara, and Secretariat police stations, among others.
The November 26 protests were triggered by a “do-or-die” call from former prime minister Imran Khan and the PTI, demanding the release of jailed party leaders and the resignation of the government over alleged rigging in the 2024 general elections.
Thousands of supporters marched on the capital, and the demonstrations turned violent as protesters tried to breach barricades and enter Islamabad’s high-security Red Zone, leading to clashes with police and paramilitary forces and resulting in multiple deaths and injuries.
The legal proceedings have a long history.
An ATC in Rawalpindi previously sentenced 82 PTI workers to four months’ imprisonment and fined them Rs15,000 each after they pleaded guilty to participating in violent protests that left three Rangers personnel and a policeman dead, a claim the party has vehemently denied.
