LAHORE: Vice Emir of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan and Secretary General of Milli Yakjehti Council Liaquat Baloch has urged the Afghan Taliban government to end its patronage of terrorist organisations and take clear and concrete steps to ensure lasting peace in the region.

Addressing the annual meeting of the Central Shura of Islami Jamiat Talaba here, Baloch said tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan were increasing and warned that the risk of conflict in the region was growing. He emphasised that the Taliban government must act decisively to prevent militant groups from operating from Afghan soil.

He also stressed that political stability in Pakistan is required an end to the ongoing political crises, adding that unresolved internal conflicts were weakening the country at a critical time.

Praising Islami Jamiat Talaba, Baloch described it as a nationwide, organised and active student body that enjoys wide support among students across the country. He said the organisation had continued its struggle for the protection of Islamic ideological values and the rights of students for the past 78 years through dedicated and selfless efforts.

Baloch criticised what he termed the reluctance of the civil-military establishment, vested political elites, feudal and capitalist classes, and populist rulers to restore democratic rights for students. Despite decisions by the Supreme Court, parliament and cabinets, he said, governments in Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the federal capital Islamabad had failed to hold student union elections. He called for immediate elections to student unions to promote democratic and national political training of the younger generation.

Earlier, Baloch attended a prayer ceremony held for veteran politician Syed Zaeem Qadri and offered condolences over the death of Asim Aziz, brother of former information secretary Shoaib Bin Aziz. He also addressed a public Iftar program hosted by senior Jamaat-e-Islami leader Faiz-ul-Bari.
