PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to start a railway service in the Peshawar Valley with federal cooperation. The service has been named ‘Peshawar Valley Railway’.

In this connection, the Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has written a letter to the Secretary and Chairman Pakistan Railways in this regard.

According to the letter, ground work has been started for the pre-feasibility study of the project, while in the first phase; work will be done on the 62-kilometer Peshawar, Nowshera and Jahangira railway section.

In the second phase, work will be done on the 65-kilometer Nowshera, Mardan and Dargai railway section, 27-kilometer Mardan, Charsadda section and 18-kilometer Peshawar, Jamrud section, while the 60-kilometer Kohat- Jhund railway section is also included in the project.

The Pakhtunkhwa government is working on introducing railcars and diesel multiple units on the existing railway infrastructure, and suburban rail services will be implemented in a phased manner under the railways’ open access framework.

Secretary Transport Department Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Muhammad Zubair, said in a conversation with a private news channel that the project will prove to be a game changer and for the first time, the provincial and federal governments will work together on it, which will increase the business and income of the railways, while millions of commuters, including women and children, will benefit from this service every day.
