ISLAMABAD: The acting chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, said on Thursday that any criticism of former prime minister Imran Khan’s family was a violation of party policy, warning there was no place in the party for those making derogatory remarks about Khan’s sisters.

The statement from Gohar comes in wake of estranged party MNA Sher Afzal Marwat and Senator Mishal Yousafzai, who have constantly been targeting Imran Khan’s sisters, which has earned the ire of the party workers.

There is a growing demand to shut the duo down, with party workers alleging they are acting at the behest of rivals and calling for their criticism to be stopped forthwith.

Reiterating the party’s stance, Gohar said PTI leaders must show restraint and act responsibly; stressing again that criticism of Khan’s family was against party policy.

A day ago, PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja has already indicated that strict action would be taken against Mishal Yousafzai over what he described as an unnecessary outburst against the sisters of Khan.

He made it clear that anyone holding a Senate seat or a National Assembly membership on the party’s ticket who targeted the jailed party founder’s sisters would not be allowed to remain in the party.

Gohar also announced a call for a nationwide shutterdown strike on February 8, urging people across Pakistan to take part in protests.

“There is no distinction between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa or Punjab. The protest will take place across the country,” he said.

He added that participation in the February 8 protest would be voluntary and that no one would be coerced into joining.

“February 8 is a major black day for democracy,” he said.
