KARACHI: Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue, Senator Saleem Mandviwalla paid tribute to the founder of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, on his 149th birth anniversary. He visited Quaid’s mausoleum where he offered fateha and laid a floral wreath. The senator also recorded his remarks in the visitors’ book.
Talking to the media, the Senator said Pakistan should truly reflect Jinnah’s vision of a secular and inclusive state. The lawmakers had a collective responsibility to uphold those principles through legislation and governance.
Turning to economic issues, the Senator defended the privatization of Pakistan International Airlines, arguing that the loss-making national carrier had been facing the risk of operational collapse. Privatization, he said, had provided a chance for the airline to recover financially and rebuild its standing.
Senator Saleem Mandviwalla said the investors involved in the process are experienced business figures and was confident that they would help restore the airline’s profitability. He also criticized the previous Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government for mishandling of the aviation sector, referring to the decision to ground a large number of pilots following a fatal air crash. International practice, he said, relied on varied assessment mechanisms to evaluate pilot competence rather than blanket suspensions.
