In an interesting development on the country’s political landscape, PML-N chief and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has called for accountability of “those who brought Imran Khan” to power in 2018. According to him, the purported backers of the PTI founder were bigger “criminals” than the incarcerated former prime minister.
Speaking to the newly-elected lawmakers yesterday, Nawaz Sharif reportedly said, among other things, that “I believe Imran Khan was not the lone criminal. Those who brought him to power were bigger criminal than he was. They should also be held accountable”.
How ironic it is that Nawaz Sharif has the gall to attempt to tarnish the credibility of PTI victory in 2018 while his own party has come to power through the most fraudulent elections in the history of the country. The 2024 general elections that catapulted the PML-N into power yet again were rigged in favour of Nawaz Sharif’s party so much so that emir Jamaat-e-Islami Hafiz Naeemur Rahman who had won a Sindh Assembly seat gave it up because he said the vote was rigged as the candidate backed by Imran Khan’s party had received far more votes than him (emir Jamaat-e-Islami).
Little does perhaps Nawaz Sharif know that only the people of Pakistan had brought Imran Khan to power by expressing their massive support to him or his party through their votes. However, insofar as the credibility of the incumbent government’s mandate is concerned, the less said about it, the better.
