ISLAMABAD: Malik Amin Aslam – the lynchpin of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s billion tree tsunami programme– parted ways with the party on Thursday, saying the party has been overtaken by an “agenda” which got exposed during May 9 protests.
Speaking at a presser, he said that “May 9 incidents left me shocked as PTI workers took the law in their hands [and] wherever the rallies took place, military installations remained the target which is not acceptable”.
He continued that the party leadership should have conducted an inquiry into May 09 rampage and whoever pushed the destructive agenda could not be a party’s well-wisher.
He added that he could not stay with such an “agenda” while clarifying that he made the decision without coming under any pressure.
Aslam claimed that this is the sort of agenda which fulfils the dreams of our enemies and he could no longer continue with the party in such circumstances.
“We did not even spare the monuments of our martyrs…our leadership should have initiated an inquiry, but nothing has so far been done,” he added.
Separately, Dr Muhammad Amjad, who was deputy secretary of information, also parted ways with the party.
Reacting to the exodus of PTI leaders especially those from southern Punjab region, PTI central information secretary Farrukh Habib said that all those who have quit the party had already been shown the door after being denied party tickets.
“The sell-outs who have quit the party had already been denied party tickets by the PTI chairman, as they’d taken money…Zahir Alizai had also quit politics long ago as his nephew was not given a party ticket,” he added.
Senior PTI leader also reacted to the development and said that the politicians jumping ship would not be missed and encouraged party supporters to remain hopeful.
“In politics, leaders are made by resistance. The political struggle is the name of ups and downs. Hundreds of courageous young leaders emerged in the ranks of PTI during the party’s most difficult period yet [and] those who left will be replaced by young leadership,” he tweeted.
