The government-opposition confrontation has intensified in recent days. Both the sides have been stepping up their attacks on each other. This unfortunate situation is obtaining in the midst of coronvirus pandemic, which has already caused a huge dent on the economic activity in the country. Both seem to have forgotten that the economic challenges thrown up by the pandemic require a consensual approach to a variety of issues, including those relating to governance and legislation, for their resolution. The surge in coronavirus cases has already demoralized people in a big way. Political point-scoring by both the government and opposition is of no help insofar as the economic challenges in the country are concerned. In my humble view, the situation underscores the need for a kind of moratorium or 'ceasefire' between the government and opposition until the nation is able to fully defeat the menace of coronavirus. Our politicians must not add to people's woes.
